How reading time is calculated
Reading time is based on an average of 238 words per minute for adults reading online. Speaking time uses about 150 words per minute, which is useful for planning videos, podcasts and presentations.
Using keyword density sensibly
Use your main keyword naturally in the title, introduction and a heading or two. There is no magic percentage. If the density goes above about 3%, read the text aloud. If it sounds repetitive, use synonyms instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser and nothing is sent to our server.
How long should a blog post be?
Long enough to answer the question fully, and no longer. For many how-to topics that is 1,200–2,500 words, but quality matters more than length.
Does it count numbers and hyphenated words?
Yes. Numbers count as words, and hyphenated words such as “step-by-step” count as one word.
