Use at least 8 characters. A short phrase of 3–4 random words is strong and easy to remember.
Most PDF readers respect these settings, but they’re not foolproof. The password needed to open the file is what really protects it.
⚠️ Keep your password somewhere safe. It can’t be recovered – if you forget it, nobody (including us) can open the file.

Password tips
- Use at least 8 characters – longer is stronger. Three or four random words make a strong, memorable password.
- Send the password separately, for example by text message rather than in the same email as the file.
- Store it safely: a password manager is ideal. Forgotten passwords can’t be recovered.
Frequently asked questions
Can you recover a forgotten password?
No. The file is encrypted in your browser and we never see your password, so nobody can open it without it.
Will it open on any device?
Yes. AES-256 encrypted PDFs open in modern readers such as Adobe Acrobat, Chrome, Edge, Preview on Mac and phone PDF apps.
How secure are the print and copy settings?
Most readers respect them, but they’re not foolproof. The open password is what really protects your file.
