How to use the UTM link builder

  1. Paste the page you want to send people to.
  2. Fill in the source (where the link is shared, e.g. facebook), medium (the type of traffic, e.g. social or email) and campaign (e.g. spring-sale). The quick-fill buttons do the first two for you.
  3. Copy your tracked link and use it in your post, email or ad.
  4. In Google Analytics, look under Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition to see the results.

Tips for clean tracking

  • Use lowercase and hyphens consistently. “Facebook” and “facebook” show up as two different sources.
  • Agree a short list of mediums (social, email, cpc, affiliate) and stick to it.
  • Never use UTM links on internal links within your own site, because they overwrite the original traffic source.

What is a UTM parameter?

A UTM parameter is a tag added to the end of a URL, such as ?utm_source=facebook. Analytics tools read these tags to tell you where each visitor came from.

Which UTM fields are required?

Source, medium and campaign are the three you should always fill in. Term and content are optional and useful for paid keywords or A/B tests.

Do UTM links affect SEO?

No. Google ignores UTM parameters for ranking. Just avoid using them on internal links.

Can I shorten a UTM link?

Yes. You can run the finished link through a link shortener; the tracking still works after the redirect.
